Located high on a hill and on the ancient road that used to connect Siena to Florence - passing by Castellina and Greve-, the Borgo di Pietrafitta dominates the Chianti hills as it has throughout the ages.
Once a rural settlement, it most probably gets its name from the milestone still standing behind the small Romanic church, whose bell tower, acting as a lighthouse, used to show travelers the trail of the original Via Chiantigiana.
Some parts of the ancient fortified farmhouse survived the passing of time, and it was on top of those ruins that the estate villa was eventually built: the old cellar, with the characteristic barrel-like vaults, as well as the remains of an old oil mill are evidence of that past. The north part of the villa, with the fortified wall reinforcement, lends credence to speculation that once there was a tower for the protection of the valley that stretches all the way to Panzano. However, the two towers guarding the west side are still standing, one of which has the characteristic 'base a scarpa' (scarp wall) structure.
The church, the school, the vegetable garden, the pens for domestic animals, the characteristic winter garden, and the small cemetery hidden away in the forest, as well as a careful restoration, all contribute in making Pietrafitta a small and delightful village, which today specializes solely in welcoming travelers eager to discover and experience the authentic atmosphere of the Chianti region. Now as then, this town may be reached by taking the trails of art, good wine, and good table, guided by the solitary church bell tower which rises on top of the cypress road.
Nowadays, the Borgo di Pietrafitta has been completely recycled and restored in order to welcome travelers eager to soak in the reassuring charm of tradition while enjoying rooms that have character and offer the most modern amenities. From the white roads one can make out the old manor house, the farm-house, the houses, the barn, and the school of the old village. The apartments of the Relais are housed within these structures and have been carefully designed to ensure the privacy of clients.
